Buzzer beater rims out, Tigers fall at Southeastern

BURLINGTON – Putting a ranked foe on upset alert, the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team saw its double-digit, second-half lead disappear in a 66-63 loss to Southeastern Community College Saturday.

Mike Rodriguez had one final chance to tie the game with a 35-foot 3-pointer that rimmed out at the buzzer, keeping the NJCAA Division I No. 20-ranked Blackhawks (20-4, 5-0) unbeaten in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.

MCC held a 43-32 advantage early in the second half before SCC pulled within three and later used a 12-2 spurt to claim a 60-55 lead. Rodriguez hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 62-61 with 25 seconds remaining before the teams traded free throws. Trailing by three with 7.1 seconds to play, Rodriguez drove the length of the court but his buzzer-beater attempt hit the back of the rim.

The Tigers (12-12, 1-5) shot 67 percent in the first half and led 34-26 at the break before dropping their fourth game of the season by less than five points.

The Tigers have a week off before hosting Northeast CC at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
