Straub, Ames break free of Bobcat boys
AMES – Sam Straub went off for 21 points and 15 rebounds in leading the Ames boys’ basketball team past rival Marshalltown, 67-50, in a Central Iowa Conference Northern Division clash Friday night.
Javan White added 18 points and Sam Rathe had 12 more for the Little Cyclones (9-9, 5-0), who notched their third win in a row – and second in a week against the Bobcats (3-15, 0-5).
Aaron Hauser scored all of his team-leading 16 points in the second half for Marshalltown, while Dylan Diveney’s 13 points all came prior to the intermission.
The Bobcats sustained their ninth consecutive loss, going 10-of-18 from the free-throw line while netting just six 3-pointers.
“I really like the way we competed in a tough environment,” said MHS coach Scott Smith. “It had a tournament feel to it with the atmosphere, the adrenaline. I thought it was a good, hard-fought game.
“I’m disappointed we came out on the short end of the stick but I’m proud of the way the kids competed from start to finish.”
Mason McCarville contributed seven points while Brady Arment and Connor Johnson had five points apiece for MHS, which hosts Ankeny in a make-up game Monday at the Roundhouse.
