Family: My parents are Nancy and Stan Van Wyk. I have a younger brother, Ryan.

Pets: Angie, a German Shorthair Pointer.

Hobbies and interests: Reading, painting, photography, playing the piano, theater and writing.


Occupation: Events Coordinator at the Iowa Valley Community College District Orpheum Theater Center in Marshalltown.

What that means: The position is responsible for the marketing and supervision of the Orpheum center and the point of contact for events, movies and conferences. This job includes coordinating, scheduling, and planning the usage of the center’s facilities.

Tenure: Since 2013.

Best part of work: I like thinking of new ways to get people involved in the Orpheum. I also enjoy brainstorming about events and ideas to make the Orpheum the place to be.

If I could change jobs: If I could change jobs I would want to be either a novelist or a screenwriter for a British Broadcasting Corporation One show.


Book: The last book I read was “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare” and my favorite of all time is “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts.

Movies: They include; “Amar, Akbar, Anthony,” “Aaja Nachle,” “Mulan,” “Gone With The Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz.” My favorite television shows are “Dr. Who,” “Downton Abbey” and BBC One’s “Sherlock.”

Foods: Fresh mangos, Aloo Gobi

Sports: I bleed black and gold. Go Hawkeyes!


Best part of living here: The best part of living in Marshalltown is having family close.

Most influential people: My parents.

Advice on life: Figure out what inspires you, have the willingness to put the hours in, and do it until you are great at it.
