MOBI continues its success
The Marshalltown Optimist Basketball Invitational, or MOBI as we call it, completed recently two successful weekends when 24 girls’ and 24 boys’ teams competed in grade divisions 58.
The Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club has sponsored MOBI since the inception of boys’ MOBI in 1986. The members of the Noon Optimist Club pitch in with many volunteer hours but we could not do it by ourselves. The Noon Optimist Club wishes to acknowledge and thank the many community volunteers who help us out on MOBI weekends by keeping score at the games, running the game clock, selling tickets and helping in the concessions. Especially to be singled out are the MHS cheerleaders and the MHS Forensics Club.
We receive superb cooperation from the Marshalltown Community School District and school administrators who permit us to use the gyms at Miller, Lenihan and the MHS Roundhouse. We are grateful especially to the school administrators Grant Brintnall at Miller, Ralph Bryant at Lenihan and Craig Huegel at MHS.
MOBI enjoys an excellent reputation with the coaches, participants and parents in central Iowa because we have excellent referees. Thanks to Bob Averill for scheduling all the referees for the 84 games over the two weekends.
The Noon Optimist Club uses the proceeds from our tournament to support the Bobcat Booster Club, Lenihan and Miller students, the MHS cheerleaders, the MHS Forensics Club
The motto of Optimist International is “Friend of Youth” and the Marshalltown Noon Optimist Club upholds this motto not only with MOBI but as sponsors of essay and oratorical contests for area students, Iowa Optimist Junior Golf state tournament, Pedal Pull state championships, a local Lego team that takes part in regional and state competitions, regional Special Olympics, four annual $750 scholarships to Marshalltown Community College, and Youth Appreciation Week where outstanding area fifth grade students are honored for their accomplishments both in school and in the community. This tournament helps support these and other youth projects and we thank the many youth and adult volunteers who continue to make MOBI a huge success for youth in our community and central Iowa since 1986!
