Tigers start Guilford series with season-high 9 runs
JAMESTOWN, N.C. – Aneudis Sandoval had three of the Marshalltown Community College baseball team’s 13 hits as the Tigers opened its weekend series – a day late – with a 9-5 victory over Guilford Technical Community College on Saturday.
After Friday’s series opener was called off, the Tigers (4-6) made up for it with 13 hits and a season-high nine runs to help snap a three-game slide.
A five-run sixth inning proved key in the victory, bringing MCC back from a 2-1 deficit for a 6-2 lead. The Tigers used five pitchers to cover the nine-inning tilt, scattering 11 hits in the win.
Alexis Melendez went 2-for-5 at the plate with his first career home run and three RBIs, while Bennett Mann was 1-for-4 with his third home run in the Tigers’ last four games. Sandoval ended up 3-for-6 with a double, two runs and two RBIs.
Austin Allen was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and stole two bases, and leadoff batter Daryl Blaskovich ended up 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs and two RBIs.
Prince De Marco was credited with the win for the MCC pitching staff, allowing a run and two hits with three strikeouts over two innings.
The Tigers close out their initial spring trip with today’s doubleheader against the Guilford Tech Titans starting with the first seven-inning game at noon.
