Tigers close Carolina trip with a sweep of Guilford
JAMESTOWN, N.C. – The Marshalltown Community College baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of Guilford Technical CC with a pair of victories on Sunday to wrap up a week-long trip to North Carolina.
Danny Smith (1-1) and two relievers combined on a seven-hitter as the Tigers took the opener 8-1. Bennett Mann belted his fourth home run of the season, Ty Russell added a solo shot for his first round-tripper of the spring, and MCC (7-6) was sparked by a six-run second inning.
Kyle Herrick pitched two hitless innings in relief of Richard England (2-0) for his first save to finish off the Tigers’ 7-5 triumph in the nightcap. Ryan Thrasher connected on his first collegiate home run and drove in three, while Eric Kent was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored to pace MCC’s offense in the second game.
England allowed just four hits but surrendered five earned runs on five walks with five strikeouts, but Herrick kept the lead he inherited.
Thrasher was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, while leadoff batter Daryl Blaskovich was 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In the opener, Mann went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, while Blaskovich, Aneudis Sandoval and Parker Rolfes had two hits apiece.
Smith scattered six hits over 4 2/3 innings for the win, walking two and striking out three. Kent and Chris Thompson combined on the final 2 1/3 frames to finish off the victory.
Marshalltown takes the week off before venturing south for a four-game weekend against Crowder College in Neosho, Mo.
