Healthy Family Fair back on Saturday

Children will be able to spot their favorite celebrities like Elmo, Cat in the Hat and Dora while parents will be able to learn about services in the community to help families.

The Healthy Family Fair will return from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Marshall Town Center. It will feature dozens of booths and more than 30 agencies or organizations with information on parenting and safety.

“With this winter it will be a fun diversion and a fun activity for families and everything is free,” said Laurie Gowdy of Child Abuse Prevention Services, which is the organizer of the event. “They can learn about helping keep their kids safe and healthy and can have a good time.”

The event usually draws hundreds of people and new this year will be an indoor playground sponsored by Parks and Recreation.

Gowdy said the fair is geared toward children and their parents ages 0 to 5, but all children are welcome to take part.

A free book will be given out to all children and many of the booths have free items as well to hand out. Other activities include a balloon artist, storyteller, dance demonstrations and a car safety seat demonstration.

Gowdy said the children also get excited to see characters like Elmo and Dora up close.

“They love it when they get to see those characters,” Gowdy said.
