New oldies radio station hits the air
Those looking for oldies music on the radio now have a new offering – and it’s transmitted from Marshalltown.
KDAO has added a new oldies station this week, which has started broadcasting at 103.7 FM. It’s the same syndicated programming that is currently on 1190 AM. The station features hits from the 60s, 70s and 80s and is locally owned by MTN Broadcasting.
Mark Osmundson, owner of MTN, said when the 103.7 frequency became available they thought they could fill a need by offering a local oldies FM station.
“This oldies format appeals to a little bit older audience,” Osmundson said. “A lot of Baby Boomers in their fifties and sixties seem to like it. We felt this gives us the opportunity to reach another group of people.”
John Wirkler, station manager, said he plays music at dances in town and has heard from people wanting a local oldies station.
“I’ve found a huge demand for this style of music,” Wirkler said.
The station will run 24 hours a day, seven days a week and play music programmed by Scott Shannon, a nationally-known professional for his “True Oldies” format.
“We inject local news, sports and weather to give it a local flavor,” Osmundson said.
KDAO is locally owned by MTN Broadcasting, Inc. and started broadcasting on 1190 AM in December 1978. The station based on North Center Street also offers KDAO Soft Rock (99.5), KTDV (91.9) and KDAO-TV.
