MCC bats go silent after fast start against Crowder

NEOSHO, Mo. – A strong start at the plate didn’t last long for the Marshalltown Community College baseball team.

After piling up three runs in their first at-bat of the day, the Tigers went scoreless over the next 15 frames dropping a pair of games Friday to NJCAA Div. I No. 20 ranked Crowder College at Roughrider Field.

The Roughriders rallied late for a 4-3 nine-inning victory in the opener, before cruising to a 9-0 rout to close out the sweep.

The Tigers (6-8) strung together four two-out hits in the first frame of the opener as Ty Russell, Ryan Thrasher and Eric Kent all scored to put MCC up 3-0.

MCC went down in order over the next five innings and the Roughriders eventually tied it up in the sixth. Heading to extras, the Tigers threatened when Pedro Lopez led off the ninth with a double, but failed to advance.

Crowder (9-3) scored the go-ahead run unearned off of sophomore John Bloom on a one-out double to claim the win.

Freshman Rich England struck out four batters through the first three frames, but Crowder tallied a run in the third.

England recorded six strikeouts, while Lopez tallied his second multi-hit game of the year, going 2-for-4 at the dish.

The Tigers could never get the bats going in the nightcap as they were limited to one hit, a leadoff single in the top of the seventh from Aneudis Sandoval. Freshman Austin Battaglia was saddled with the loss. No stats were available for the Roughriders.

The two teams resume play with a doubleheader today with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
