Marshalltown recognized by Site Selection magazine

Site Selection magazine – an award-winning publication read by CEOs and business expansion decision-makers – cited Marshalltown and Iowa for economic development efforts in its March issue released Monday.

The magazine recognized areas, cities and states best suited for economic expansion and continued growth.

Marshalltown tied with Ottumwa and Spencer for 70th in the micropolitan, or small, urban cities with populations between10,000 and 50,000.

“We are honored to have been recognized by Site Selection magazine,” said Tom Deimerly, president of the Marshall Economic Development Impact Committee. “The award is just one more feather in our cap, as we work to distinguish ourselves from other communities our size.”

Burlington, Clinton, Spirit Lake and Muscatine all tied with a ranking of 41 in the micropolitan category.

Earning high honors in the large city category were Council Bluffs-Omaha, Des Moines-West Des Moines, Dubuque and Sioux City.

To qualify, communities nationwide were evaluated by the magazine’s “New Plant Database,” which factored in new construction and met at least one of the following three criteria: a capital investment of $1 million or more; creation of a minimum of 50 jobs; or the addition of at least 20,000 square feet of new floor space. The projects are tracked for calendar year rankings. Retail, government, school, medical office and hospital projects did not qualify.

The magazine ranked Iowa sixth in the Governor’s Cup per capita rankings, a list of states with the highest number of qualified capital investment projects in the previous calendar year

On Iowa’s ranking, Gov. Terry Branstad said: “We’re pleased to have this significant recognition from Site Selection, a leading publication for business executives looking to expand their operations and create jobs. This distinction is yet another sign that Iowa is working and the pro-growth economic policies our administration introduced are moving Iowa forward.”

Texas won the Governor’s Cup, as it attracted the most new and expanded corporate project announcements in 2013. Nebraska took second place.
