Historical Society’s annual meeting slated

History aficionados will have the opportunity to hear about new exhibits during the Historical Society of Marshall County’s annual meeting while helping out the stately Binford House too.

It all takes place March 15.

The historic Binford House, 110 N. Second Ave. in Marshalltown, kicks off the day with a luncheon and book sale fundraiser at 11:30 a.m.

Built in 1874, the Binford House is an Italianate style design and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

It is also the original home of the Marshalltown Federation of Women’s Clubs.

At the HSMC, board members Susan Ford Williams and Scott Mason have been working diligently on the museum’s second floor displays, and plan to have those finished soon.

Several are getting a fresh look, but the exhibit featuring prominent local women will be totally changed.

The exhibit showcases women who had a significant impact on Marshalltown and area education, the arts and social justice.

“Women helped build Marshalltown and Marshall County,” said Williams.

Jessie Binford and Martha Ellen Tye will be featured, along with Rose Bannon Johnson, who represented Marshalltown in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and later, served as its state chapter president.
