Holtz heaves shot put for second-place performance

CEDAR FALLS – South Tama County’s Samantha Holtz picked right up from last spring’s state meet with a second-place finish at the A.D. Dickinson Relays at the University of Northern Iowa Monday.

Holtz finished with a heave of 36 feet, 8 inches to finish 12 spots ahead of fellow Trojan Tieranny Keahna (33-07.00) at the indoor opener.

BCLUW’s Mallory Vawter took 12th in the 60-meter dash in 8.34 seconds, before claiming 17th in the 200 (28.09).

STC’s Belle Tyynismaa earned 20th in the 400 (1:05.76) and 25th in the long jump (14-09.25), while Taylor Ellenbecker was 25th in the 3,000 (12:05.36).

The Trojans also tallied top-35 finishes in the 4×400 (18th, 4:32.56), 4×800 (25th, 11:16.39) and 4×200 (35th, 2:01.35).

GMG’s win at Wartburg

WAVERLY – GMG senior Caitlin Appelgate kicked off the year with a first-place finish by clearing 5 feet, 2 inches to win the high jump title at the Wartburg Indoor meet on Tuesday.

GMG is back in action Monday at the Iowa State Indoor meet and goes to the Central College Indoor on March 22.
