Bearden tapped for state board of education

Michael Bearden, of Gladbrook, was appointed to the Iowa Board of Education by Gov. Terry Branstad.

The board provides leadership and coordination of the education system from early childhood education through community college; adopt rules for enforcement of laws; strive for higher levels of learning and achievement for all students and adopt long-range plans for the education system.

The board also acts as the state board for vocational education and vocational rehabilitation; recommend changes in school law to the General Assembly and adopts rules for accrediting public and nonpublic schools, area education agencies and community colleges.

The board hears appeals of the local board decisions, collaborates with other educational and non-educational bodies and organizations, approve the budgets of the community colleges and the area education agencies and approve educator preparation programs.

Bearden is the executive vice president of Clapsaddle-Garber Associates in Marshalltown. He also formerly served on the Gladbrook-Reinbeck school board.

Commission of veterans affairs adds Ledvina

Gov. Terry Branstad has appointed Elizabeth Ledvina, of Toledo, to the Iowa Commission of Veterans Affairs.

The commission purpose is to establish policy for the management and operation of the commission, provide oversight for operation of Iowa Veterans Home.

The commission also maintains registry of graves for all veterans, in times of war, whose mortal remains rest in Iowa.

Ledvina, is the Tama County Veterans Affairs Office director.
