Tiger tandem named 2nd team all-region

Expanding their roles on a shortened roster for the second half of the season, Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball players Troidell Carter and Mike Rodriguez were both named to the Division I All-Region XI second team Monday.

Carter, a sophomore, earned second-team status a year after garnering honorable mention. The Lilburn, Georgia native averaged 18.4 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play, and finished at 15.4 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest overall.

Finishing fourth in the conference in rebounding, Carter stepped up his production in a six-game span from Feb. 8-24 where he averaged 25.5 points and 10.2 rebounds a game, while recording three double-doubles. The 6-foot-9 center amassed eight double-doubles on the season and scored in double-digits 27 times, including seven games of at least 20 points. Carter twice earned ICCAC Player of the Week honors.

Rodriguez sparked the Tigers’ backcourt and took over starting point guard duties on Jan. 8. The fleet-footed freshman thrived in the larger role scoring in double figures in 16 straight games with a 21.3 scoring average.

The Boston, Massachusetts native scored at least 20 points on 10 occasions and posted a career-high 33 points against No. 1 nationally ranked Indian Hills Community College.

The three-times ICCAC Player of the Week ranked fourth in the conference at 16.7 points per game. The 5-foot-10 guard led MCC in points per game, free throws made and attempted, three-point percentage, assists and steals.

After a 7-7 start to the year, Carter and Rodriguez propelled the Tigers to a 17-14 mark on the season.
