SPORTS SHORTS: Former Comet named Pitcher of Week

CEDAR FALLS – Northern Iowa senior pitcher Jamie Fisher was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

Fisher, a former all-state hurler at BCLUW, picked up a pair of wins over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville and Illinois State last week. The Conrad native allowed just four earned runs in 23 innings and her earned run average was just 1.22. She also allowed opponents to a .250 batting average.

Former Bobcat playing well for Central

PELLA – Former Marshalltown Bobcat Whitney Sowers was honored this week with Iowa Conference Player of the Week honors for the Central softball team after an impressive week on the diamond.

The Dutch traveled to Arizona for a 16-game road trip and Sowers tallied eight multi-hit games in a 10-game tournament at the Tucson Invitational.

Central went 12-4 in those 16 games thanks in part to Sowers, who batted .654 with 10 runs scored and eight RBIs. She recorded two doubles, one triple, two home runs with two walks and four stolen bases. She also only struck out once during that span.
