Tiger softball splits a pair with NIACC
CRESTON – Sophomore Brianna James scattered eight hits in her complete-game victory in the opener of the Marshalltown softball team’s doubleheader split against North Iowa Area Community College during Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division II action Friday.
James helped the Tigers to a third straight conference win in the opener as MCC won 8-3, but NIACC bounced back to win the nightcap, 6-3.
Holli Baker led the Tigers at the plate in the win, tallying three hits, two home runs, a double and three runs and three RBIs in her four at-bats.
Brooke Dunkin, Lexie Biehl and Shaiann Treu all had two hits, one run and one RBI as well. Sarah Wilson also had two hits with two RBIs.
The Tigers (12-6, 3-1) tallied 13 hits in the opener and scored three runs in the third to go up 5-0 and then put the game away with two more tallies in the sixth.
James improved to 4-1 on the year as she allowed one earned run and struck out one. Her season earned run average is now just 1.17 and she has allowed just one earned run in her last four appearances.
The Tigers led game two 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but Wilson was tagged with the loss after two MCC errors allowed NIACC to rally for the win.
The doubleheader Friday was the beginning of a tough stretch for the Tigers. MCC will now play six games in the next three days. That stretch starts today as the Tigers travel to Boone to take on Ellsworth Community College in a doubleheader that starts at 9 a.m.
