Reivers rough up Tiger baseball team in sweep
COUNCIL BLUFFS – The Marshalltown Community College baseball team’s offensive drought continued on Sunday as NJCAA Division I No. 15-ranked Iowa Western wrapped up a four-game weekend sweep in Iowa Community College Athletic Conference play.
The host Reivers (26-5, 4-0) held MCC to nine hits and two runs in the final two games, picking up wins of 11-2 and 19-0.
Iowa Western took the four-game weekend series by a combined 43-4. The Tigers have not scored more than two runs in their last five games – all losses.
Marshalltown’s best chance at Iowa Western came in the opening game. Eric Kent’s first collegiate home run came in the fourth inning, and his two-run shot plated Bennett Mann and brought the Tigers to within 5-2.
But Iowa Western responded with three runs in the bottom half and three more in the fifth, running away with the 11-2 win.
Mann had two of the Tigers’ five hits in the loss. Aneudis Sandoval doubled while Austin Allen added a single. Alex McCune took the loss on the mound for MCC, lasting just three innings.
Daryl Blaskovich’s 2-for-2 plate performance was the lone highlight of the run-rule-shortened second game. Three Tiger pitchers combined to allow 16 hits and five walks, and MCC was limited to just four singles. Kent and Steven Dreesman had base-knocks in the 19-0 defeat.
Marshalltown goes back out on the road this week with non-conference doubleheaders at DMACC on Tuesday and at D-II No. 19 Kirkwood on Thursday. MCC’s home openers will be conference twinbills Saturday and Sunday against Muscatine.
