South Tama sweeps first outdoor meet of season

VAN HORNE – The South Tama County girls’ track and field team won five events at the Benton Early Bird Invitational on Monday and the Trojan boys’ team took home three top finishes.

That was enough for both squads to claim team titles after the meet was stopped after 11 events due to rain and cold temperatures.

Taylor Ellenbecker, Allison Yuska and Samantha Holtz all won individual events on the girls’ side and the team earned the team title easily with 102 points. Grinnell was second with 86 and host Benton was third with 78.

Dylan Kalinay and Ian Slagle were both individual winners on the boys’ side as the Trojans edged Belle Plaine by six points in the final team standings. STC ended up with 85 points, while Belle Plaine had 79 and Grinnell collected 71.

Ellenbecker won the 3,000-meter run in 12 minutes, 28.09 seconds, while Yuska and Holtz led the Trojans to a 1-2 finish in both the 400 and shot put. Yuska’s winning time in the 400 was 1:09.79 as she bettered teammate Madie Bacon by more than 3 seconds. Holtz’s winning toss in the shot put was 34 feet, 7 inches and Tieranny Keahna ended up second with a heave of 31-7.

The Trojans’ tallied several points in the 100 hurdles as Lauren Yuska, Alana Vest and Julie Wise ended up 2-3-4. Yuska hit the line in 19.16, while Vest came across in 19.96.

Bacon also took third in the high jump with a leap of 4-6 and was a part of the third-place 4×800 relay team. That foursome also included Jensen Vodochodsky, Regina Balderas and McKenna Knock and they hit the line in 11:38.86.

The other two wins for the Trojans came in the shuttle hurdle relay and distance medley relay. No names were available in either race, but STC finished in 1:16.92 and 5:03.80, respectively.

The 4×200 relay team of Sonya Peters, Minnie Climer, Courtney Anderson and Kiley Culbertson were third with a time of 2:01.30.

Kalinay’s win for the Trojan boys came in the 110 high hurdles as he hit the line in 16.34. Slagle’s winning throw in the discus covered 123-5 . The Trojans also won the 4×200 in 1:38.41 but names of the runners were not available.

Blake Keller recorded two runner-up finishes on the day. He took second in the 3,200 in 11:04.39 and also was second in the 1,600 with a time of 5:15.89.

Tyler Blocker recorded the other second-place finish as he hit the line in the 100 in 12.72 seconds. Peyton Rutledge also was third in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.

The STC 4×800 relay and shuttle hurdle relay teams (no names available) ended up second and third, respectively. The 4×800 team finished in 9:45.49, while the hurdlers hit the line in 1:13.56.
