Man steals rental car from girlfriend

A local man is charged with first-degree theft after he turned himself in on a warrant issued for stealing a rental car under his girlfriend’s name.

Jonathan R. Thompson, 31, was arrested Tuesday, after he turned himself in to the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office on a warrant for a vehicle theft reported March 10.

According to police, the victim called Thompson and said he never returned her calls.

Later in the afternoon the car was found vacated on the 900 block of Prairie Lane and a warrant for Thompson was issued.

After Thompson turned himself in he was taken to the Marshall County Jail. He is also charged with driving under suspension and probation violation.

Pair arrested on drug charges during traffic stop

A Marshalltown man on warrant and a woman who was with him face drug charges after they were found with marijuana and prescription pills in their car.

Juan M. Sandoval, 34, and Rosalva Castellanos, 22, were arrested Sunday, around 11 p.m., under the Center Street viaduct, after Sandoval was stopped for a traffic violation.

Capt. Brian Batterson of the Marshalltown Police Department, said Sandoval, who was wanted for failure to appear in court since March 14, was driving without a license. He was arrested then police searched his car with a K9.

They found 2 grams of marijuana, 12 Xanax pills and a pipe with marijuana residue on it.

Before more arrests were made the child sitting in the back seat was sent with relatives.

Sandoval is charged with driving without a license, possession of marijuana enhanced, due to prior convictions and unlawful possession of prescription pills.

Castellanos is charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

Man assaults ex-wife

A Blairstown man is charged with simple domestic assault after he allegedly pushed his ex-wife and blocked her and their child from getting inside a car.

Justin F. J. Hansen, 36, was arrested Monday in the parking lot of Center Associates, 9 N. Fourth Ave., when he went to pick up his 11-year-old daughter.

According to police, when Hansen went to pick up his daughter an argument ensued between he and his ex-wife, which lead to the incident.

No injuries were reported.

Dean Oziah, 303 S. Fourth Ave. Apt. #4, made an initial appearance on a possession of drug paraphernalia charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $100 with a $35 surcharge, a $125 law enforcement initiative surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $320, due within 30 days of today’s date.

Pedro Antonio Guadiana, 1505 S. Fourth St., made an initial appearance on a driving while barred charge. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 21. Guadiana was released on his own recognizance.

Andrew Anthony Singh, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving under suspension charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50, due within 30 days of today’s date.

Wednesday

Jonathan Robert Thompson, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a theft-first degree charge, a pre-trial release violation, a contempt charge for failure to appear on a probation revocation and a driving under suspension charge. Chad Frese was hired as counsel. On the theft-first degree charge the preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 11. Bond is set at $10,000 cash only. The pre-trial violation will be handled at the sentencing hearing scheduled in District Court at 1 p.m. on April 7. Bond is set at $10,000 cash only. The contempt hearing for the failure to appear on the probation violation is set for 3:15 p.m. on April 21. Bond is set at $2,000 cash only. Thompson pleaded not guilty to the driving under suspension charge and a pre-trial conference is set at 9 a.m. on May 6 in Magistrate Court. Bond on this charge is $350 cash or surety. Thompson has a hold request from Woodbury County.

Lester Tobias Lasley, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a driving while revoked charge, a operation without registration charge, a no valid driver’s license charge, a no insurance charge and a driving under suspension charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 21. Lasley was released on his own recognizance. Lasley has a Tama County hold request.

Jason Slattum, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a possession of marijuana-first offense charge, a operating while intoxicated charge and a no valid driver’s license charge. The public defender’s office was appointed to handle his case. The preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. on April 21. Slattum was released on his own recognizance with the condition that he obtain a substance abuse evaluation and submit the results to the court within 60 days of today’s date.

Milton Antwine Wright, address unknown, made an initial appearance on a simple assault charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $65 with a $22.75 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $147.75. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning May 2 or in lieu of the fine and surcharge he may do 12 hours of unpaid community service plus pay court costs to be completed by July 1. A no-contact order was issued for the protected party for a period of five years from today’s date.

Antonio Banderas, 922 N. Fifth Ave., made an initial appearance through an interpreter on a driving under suspension charge. He pleaded guilty and was fined $250 with a $87.50 surcharge and $60 in court costs for a total of $397.50. The court allowed for monthly installment payments of $50 beginning May 2 until the debt is paid in full.

William Wolgamott, of West Des Moines, made an initial appearance through counsel, Aaron Vaughn, on a failure to appear for arraignment charge. The arraignment hearing is rescheduled for 1 p.m. on April 15. Wolgamott was released with supervision through the Department of Correctional Services.

Accidents

On Thursday, March 27, a minivan driven by Amanda Jane Kalinay, 1940 235th St., was southbound on Jessup Avenue at the intersection with Highway 30 when it collided with the rear of a vehicle driven by Karen Lorraine Stoner, 2338 Jessup Ave., which had moved forward from a stopped position and then stopped again to await traffic. No injuries were reported. Damage to the Kalinay minivan was estimated at $1,000 while the Stoner vehicle received an estimated $500 in damage.
