Bobcats finish 11th at J-Hawk Invite
CEDAR RAPIDS – The best finishes for the Marshalltown girls track team Saturday came in the relays.
Scoring top-10 finishes in all five relays, the Bobcats finished 11th in the team standings during the Cedar Rapids Jefferson J-Hawk Invite.
The best finish came in the sprint medley relay where the foursome of Chione Brooks, Tabby Steffensen, Jasmine Scott and Rachel Blagg collected a fifth-place tally with a time of 1 minute, 57.39 seconds.
Marshalltown also recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 4×800 and 4×400 relays.
The two-mile foursome included Blagg, Michaela Huey, Kari Smith and Wynn Tan and that unit hit the line in 10:41.86, while the 4×400 team of Blagg, Daesha Underhill, Sabrina Daugherty and Scott ended up crossing the line in 4:23.99.
The two other relays both resulted in eighth-place finishes but each one also came in a season-best time. The 4×200 relay included Brooks, Steffensen, Underhill and Scott and they hit the finish line in 1:54.48, while the 4×100 relay team of Brooks, Leah Barkema, Steffensen and Karli McClure ended up stopping their clock at 54.15.
The Bobcats recorded three more season-best efforts during individual competition as well.
Placing 11th in the discus was junior Maggie Carnahan as her season-long throw was marked at 97 feet, 4 inches. Senior Wynn Tan was 16th in the 800-meter run but she finished in a season-best 2:40.74, while Huey was 15th in the 1,500 meter with a time of 5:36.01. Junior Samantha Hughes also claimed a top-15 finish in the shot put as her throw of 30-5 put her in 15th overall.
Marshalltown’s foreign exchange student – Carolina Freire-Vales – performed well in the junior varsity 800 meters. Freire-Vales won the JV race and would have been 10th in the varsity race as she stopped the watch at 2:37.96.
The Marshalltown girls will next compete at the Ames Invite at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
