Tigers slug 8 homers in league sweep

MUSCATINE – Bennett Mann and Aneudis Sandoval combined to hit seven of the Marshalltown Community College baseball team’s eight home runs on Sunday, driving in a total of 13 runs in the Tigers’ Iowa Community College Athletic Conference sweep of Muscatine.

Mann homered four times on the day, going 4-for-6 with four runs scored and eight RBIs. His two-run shot in the top of the seventh inning in the opener kicked off a five-run at-bat to help the Tigers snap a 7-all tie on their way to a 12-7 victory.

In the second game, Mann’s solo shot led off the seventh and cut MCC’s 5-3 deficit in half. Sandoval later connected on a two-run round-tripper, driving in Colin Schroeder on his second long ball of the game and third of the day.

Marshalltown (13-18, 4-4) notched 13 hits in the opener, with Mann, Sandoval, Austin Allen, Ty Russell and Ryan Thrasher racking up two apiece. Thrasher’s solo homer followed Mann’s three-run bomb in the fifth, helping MCC gain a 6-all tie with the host Cardinals (11-15, 1-7). Both teams tallied a run in their next at-bat before MCC broke it open with five runs in the seventh. Schyler Kane earned the win for his three innings of relief work.

The Tigers’ three-run rally in the second game earned a win for Kyle Herrick, who threw a scoreless inning of relief. East Marshall graduate John Bloom gave up two hits but struck out one in the seventh to gain his second save.

Next up for MCC is a pair of non-conference home doubleheaders. The Tigers host DMACC at 2 p.m. Tuesday and follow it up with a 2 p.m. twinbill on Wednesday against Riverland CC (Austin, Minn.).
