Eagles take two from MCC softball

CEDAR RAPIDS – Nationally ranked Kirkwood Community College put the Marshalltown CC softball team’s three-game win streak to rest with a pair of victories over the visiting Tigers in Sunday’s Iowa Community College Athletic Conference twinbill.

The No. 11 Eagles (32-5, 13-1) scored their eighth and ninth consecutive wins, taking the opener 13-1 in five innings and then the nightcap 4-2.

MCC (17-13, 5-7) fell behind 13-0 through three innings in the opening contest before scratching out its lone run in the top of the fifth. Kyndal Milder came across on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mackenzie Gott.

Lexie Biehl had two of the Tigers’ five hits in the loss. Shyanne Saladino got the win, striking out five and walking two in three frames.

Marshalltown snagged a 1-0 lead in the early stages of game two, scoring the go-ahead run in the top of the second as Emmeline Huffaker’s one-out single drove in Tacie Blunk.

Sarah Wilson held the Eagles over the first three frames before they struck for four runs in the fourth.

MCC cut the deficit to two with another run in the fifth, as Whitney Baker plated Gott with a single.

Both teams had eight hits in the nightcap. McKenna Hotopp was 3-for-3 with two doubles while Biehl and Gott both had two-hit games to lead the Tigers.

Krysta Tutsch was 2-for-2 with a home run to pace Kirkwood.

MCC’s new home opener is slated for Wednesday as No. 13 DMACC visits for an ICCAC doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
