Throwers highlight MHS girls in Ames

AMES – Propelled by fourth-place efforts from its throwers, the Marshalltown girls’ track team held its own against a competitive field at the Little Cyclone Invite Tuesday.

Maggie Carnahan turned in a career-best throw of 102 feet, 3 inches in the discus, while Samantha Hughes heaved the shot put 32-10 to post the top individual performances for the Bobcats. Marshalltown added a third-place tally in the sprint medley where Chione Brooks, Tabby Steffensen, Jasmine Scott and Rachel Blagg hit the line in 1:56.78. No scores were kept for the eight-team invite.

Brooks, Steffensen, Karli McClure and Cassidy Blackford garnered fifth in the 4×200 (1:54.86), while the 4×100 unit of Brooks, Steffensen, Karli McClure and Blackford grabbed seventh (54.27).

Sabrina Daugherty, Blackford, Daesha Underhill and Emily Murtha capped the evening with a seventh-place effort in the 4×400 (4:37.34).

Daugherty (1:07.27) and Steffensen (14.23) contributed seventh-place finishes in the 400 and 100 respectively.

The Bobcats head to the Jim Duncan Relays at Drake Stadium Saturday with action getting underway at 8:30 a.m.
