MCC baseball splits two in home opener

Putting away a five-game losing streak to DMACC, Ryan Thrasher and Ty Russell each connected on late homers as the Marshalltown Community College baseball team opened Tuesday’s home doubleheader with an 8-4 victory.

MCC (14-19) dropped the second game 13-3, but not before earning their first win over DMACC since March 23, 2011.

The triumph extended the Tigers’ season-best win streak to six before the Bears (21-10) retaliated in game two.

Julio Batista shutout DMACC in the first four innings of the opener and allowed just two hits during that stretch before the Tiger bats got going in the bottom of the fourth with a grand slam by Thrasher.

MCC started the inning with two straight singles before Alexis Melendez walked and Thrasher hit his third homer of the year.

DMACC tied it up with a run in the fifth and three more in the third off reliever Kyle Herrick.

The tie was short-lived as Melendez opened the sixth with a double and was replaced by pinch runner Collin Schroeder who proved to be the winning run, scoring on a wild pitch with two outs.

Russell added some insurance with a three-run shot to plate Austin Allen and Pedro Lopez as John Bloom threw a scoreless seventh his third straight appearance without allowing a run.

Russell finished 3-of-4 at the dish and raised his average to .555 over the last seven games.

Lopez, Bennett Mann and Aneudis Sandoval each added two hits in the 12-hit surge. Herrick earned the win to improve to 3-3.

The Bears bombarded MCC with three unearned runs off starting pitcher Schyler Kane in game two.

The teams each tallied a run in their next at-bat, before Allen’s RBI single in the bottom of the second drove in Sandoval and Thrasher also scored to bring MCC within 4-3. DMACC pulled away by scoring two runs in each of the next three innings before adding three more in the sixth.

MCC continues its homestand today with a nonconference doubleheader against Riverland Community College (Minn.) starting at 2 p.m. at Shawn Williams Field.

Mann, England honored by ICCAC

Sophomores Richard England and Bennett Mann were recognized with weekly accolades from the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference after helping the Tigers take four games from Muscatine Community College over the weekend.

England was named the ICCAC Pitcher of the Week, while Mann was tabbed the ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Mann, a Marshalltown grad, picked up his second conference player of the week honor after belting four home runs in a twin bill sweep over the Cardinals Sunday.

Mann finished 6-for-11 from the plate with five extra base hits, 8 RBIs and eight runs scored in the four-game sweep.

England complimented the offensive outburst with a dominant complete game victory on Sunday.

The Centerville native struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed just three hits to improve to 3-1 on the season.
