MHS senior lands best in show award
For Marshalltown High School senior Paola Diaz, the third time was a charm.
The third attempt at producing a certain raku vase landed the 18-year-old a best in show award in the 3D category during the 2014 CIML conference art show at the MHS/Community Auditorium Wednesday.
“I’m real excited,” Diaz said. “I was hoping to have a chance. I really do love pottery.”
The CIML show featured 150 pieces of work in a wide range of media from students in conference schools including Marshalltown, Ames, West Des Moines Valley, Waukee, Fort Dodge and Mason City. Marshalltown hosts the show every six years.
“It’s nice to be able to showcase our department and our talent,” said MHS art teacher Kirk Niehouse. “It’s also nice for other schools to come to Marshalltown and see what’s here. It was an amazing show.”
Show judge Will Hildebrandt, a retired East Marshall art teacher, said the show was difficult to judge.
“It’s great to see students creating art,” Hildebrandt said.
MHS Principal Aiddy Phomvisay was another person impressed with work by the students in the conference.
“I’m extremely impressed with the work that is here,” Phomvisay said.
Other student award winners from Marshalltown High School included blue ribbons to Kevin Soto, Maria Ramirez, Heidi Whitmore and honorable mention honors to Ma Ha, Sydney Davis, Niccole Wolken, Nyadoar Gatwech and Ryan Anderson.
Shannon Deatrick of Waukee won the overall best in show award for a self portrait piece.
