MHS blanks foes, finishes 1-1 at SEP Tournament

PLEASANT HILL – The Marshalltown girls’ soccer team didn’t give up a goal in its season-opening trip to the Southeast Polk Tournament, but the Bobcats still came away with a 1-1 record.

Lexi Vaughn scored two goals in Marshalltown’s opening 3-0 victory over Des Moines East, but a 3-1 shootout advantage for Newton gave the Cardinals a 1-0 triumph in the Bobcats’ second game of the day.

“I thought we played well in both games,” said MHS coach Allie Osmundson. “We moved the ball well and played with good possession.”

Vaughn, who will play collegiately at Iowa Central, scored in the 40th and 70th minutes on assists from Molly Major and Taylor Vaudt. Ellyn Boland scored in the 46th minute as well for MHS.

“In the second game I thought we outplayed Newton, but we weren’t able to find the back of the net,” Osmundson added. “We did a lot of positive things in both games and I think we have a good foundation to work with.”

The Bobcats are back at it with a road game Friday, facing Des Moines Roosevelt at 4:45 p.m. on field 5 at the Cownie Soccer Complex.
