ISU’s Eijm shines off court, too

AMES – Melvin Ejim was named the Big 12’s best on the court.

For the second year in a row, he’s also the best in the classroom. Ejim, who earlier this year was named the Big 12 Player of the Year, was recognized Tuesday as the 2014 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Ejim, the 2013 Big 12 Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, was named a Capital One Academic All-American after posting a 3.70 grade point average. He is pursuing a degree in history with a minor in business.

The Toronto native was named an All-American by five organizations after averaging 17.8 points and 8.4 rebounds for the Cyclones. Ejim, who scored a Big 12-best 48 points against TCU, became just the fourth player in league history to score 1,500 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in his career.

The 6-foot-6 forward also earned a spot on the Senior CLASS All-America First Team this season.
