SPORTS SHORTS: MHS girls tennis swept by Tigers
WEST DES MOINES – The road didn’t treat the Bobcats any better on the court against West Des Moines Valley Tuesday.
The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team claimed just one of 23 sets and lost 11-0.
Samantha Tocheri nearly put Marshalltown in the win column but came up two points shy in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 singles. The Tigers’ Ashlyn Shumaker held off Tocheri 6-2, 4-6, (15-13).
Marshalltown threatened twice in doubles but came up empty both times. Jenna Jaeckel and Tocheri lost a 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 decision at No. 3 doubles, while Yelitza Patricio and Immaculate Edwin lost a 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) match at No. 4.
The Bobcats (0-2) return home to face Ankeny Centennial Thursday at 4 p.m.
Clark’s hat trick propels G-R to victory
REINBECK – The Class 1A No. 6-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys’ soccer team got a hat trick from Chase Clark in their 4-0 victory over South Tama/East Marshall here on Tuesday night.
Clark moved his season goals tally to five while the Rebels improved to 2-0. Dustin Dinsdale also scored a goal while Wyatt Swanson chalked up three assists in the win.
G-R goalkeeper Josh Cooley was credited with 10 saves in his second shutout.
STC/EM (0-4) was blanked in its second straight defeat.
South Hardin girls edge Union netters
LA PORTE CITY – The South Hardin girls’ tennis team scored a 2-1 advantage in doubles play to defeat Union Community 5-4 on Tuesday night, improving to 2-0.
Ellen Swartz and Mikayla Fisher, at the Nos. 1 and 2 singles positions for South Hardin, both improved to 2-0 with 8-0 victories. Kailey Richard also won at No. 4, 8-5.
Swartz and Hannah Reifschneider netted an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 doubles spot, and Fisher and Richard prevailed 8-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Next up for the Tigers is Thursday’s dual meet with Ballard at Huxley.
Knights knock out Tiger boys tennis
ELDORA – Freshman Josiah Dorow claimed the only South Hardin match win as the Tigers were defeated 8-1 by visiting Union Community on Tuesday night.
Dorow won his No. 3 singles match over Knights senior Jacob Zeien, 10-6.
Ethan Balvanz, at No. 2 singles, fought back to within 10-6, while Micah Dorow was defeated 10-2 at No. 1.
The Tigers return to action at home on Thursday, hosting Iowa Falls-Alden.
