SPORTS SHORTS: Van Dyk medals, STC girls win again

ACKLEY – Paige Van Dyk won medalist honors for the third time in as many meets to start the season and the South Tama girls’ golf team took down host AGWSR 195-238 on Thursday at the Ackley Recreation Club.

Van Dyk carded the low round of 38 on the par-32 course, while STC teammate Carrie Cibula was runner-up with her 47. Laurel Scharnweber shot a 51 and Erin Clayton a 59 to round out the Trojans’ scoring.

Ashley Sicard paced AGWSR with a 49. Brooke Harrenstein shot a 51, followed by Kenzie Huisman’s 64 and Kim Ventura’s 74 for the Cougars.

Grinnell roughs up STC/EM girls soccer

GRINNELL – Mariah Deppe, Malia Durr, Morgan Finch and Olivia Gallo each scored two goals as the Grinnell girls’ soccer team toppled South Tama/East Marshall 10-0 on Thursday night.

The host Tigers improved to 3-1 on the season after taking a 6-0 halftime lead and easing to the victory. Finch totaled six points with her two goals and two assists. Baylee Kivett and Hannah O’Polka scored one goal apiece, while Deppe, Durr, Gallo and O’Polka each tallied one assist.

Hanna Keckler came up with nine saves in net for STC/EM, while Sam Earley made four stops. The Trojans (0-4) were held scoreless for the fourth time in as many matches this season.

Spartan tennis splits at Webster City

WEBSTER CITY – The Grundy Center boys’ tennis team posted a 5-1 advantage in singles play en route to a 7-2 triumph over Webster City on Thursday night.

The Spartans also took two of three doubles bouts to improve to 2-1 in duals this season.

Drew Sharp was an 8-3 winner over Andrew Straw at the No. 1 singles spot, while Ethan Hogle won 8-4 at No. 2. Andrew Day held on for a 9-7 win at No. 3, Jarrett Stover needed a tie-breaker to top Ben Grimshaw at No. 5, 9-8 (7-3), and Jared Clapp was a 9-7 win in the No. 6 singles spot.

Sharp and Hogle teamed up to win at No. 1 doubles, and Stover and Clapp paired up to win at No. 3.

The Spartan girls dropped to 0-3 with a 7-2 loss to the host Lynx. Gabby Haman and Meghan Saak, at Nos. 3 and 5 singles, respectively, accounted for Grundy Center’s only victories.

Colo-NESCO golf reigns at NE Hamilton

DOWS – Cole Ozbun won a cardback for runner-up medalist honors to help the Colo-NESCO boys’ golf team win a triangular on Thursday at Dows Golf Course.

Ozbun shot 45 to lead the Royals, who shot 198 to defeat CMB (207) and host Northeast Hamilton (221). Rounds of 49 from Isaiah Texeira and Tanner Clatt, and Evan Dodd’s 55, got the Royals to the top spot.

Garrett Huske of CMB was the meet medalist with a 45.

On the girls’ side, Colo-NESCO was uncontested in team play. The Royals shot a 235 with Courtney Clapper winning meet medalist honors with her 56. Zoee Risdal shot a 59, while McKenna Farren and Alex Hlavacek both carded 60s.

Northeast Hamilton, with just three golfers, was led by Leah Meyer’s 64.
