Wolken wins again, MHS tops Dodgers

FORT DODGE – Taking the first step in defending its Central Iowa Conference Northern Division crown, the Marshalltown girls’ golf team defeated Fort Dodge 184-199 on the Fort Dodge Country Club’s front nine Tuesday.

Niccole Wolken captured medalist honors by firing a 5-over 40, while Ashley Harris added a 43 for runner-up. Wolken claimed her second top finish of the year and finished 1-over par during her last five holes including a birdie on the par-4 sixth.

The Bobcats (1-1, 1-0) also got a 50 from Natalie Kueny, while Madison Sogge and Shelby Brennecke tallied 51s. Kierra Carbajal turned in a 56.

“Niccole played a steady round of golf and did a great job of keeping the ball in the fairway and hitting greens in regulation,” MHS coach Lucas Johnson said. “As a team, I’m happy with the way we’re hitting the ball. We’re usually on or near the green in regulation most of the time, but we’re giving away too many strokes with our putting. I was happy to see the girls make a B-line to the practice green after the match and work on it straight-away.”

Peyton Christy’s 45 paced the Dodgers, Kylie Kuiper carded a 46 and Jozlynn Port and Alexa Hayes completed Fort Dodge’s scoring quartet with 54 each.

The Bobcats head to the Ankeny Invite at Otter Creek Golf Course Thursday at 9 a.m. The field features 11 teams.
