16th-ranked Tritons take down MCC

FORT DODGE – Marshalltown Community College’s early lead was erased by Iowa Central’s three-run third inning and the 16th-ranked hosts took a 9-5 decision in a non-conference baseball game here Tuesday afternoon.

The Division II Tritons (29-14) improved to 16-4 at Ed Barbour Field, scoring runs in five of their eight at-bats. A three-run third got Iowa Central in front, 3-2, and the Tritons never trailed again in handing MCC its fifth consecutive loss.

Daryl Blaskovich’s solo home run one out into the top of the first inning gave MCC (17-27) the first tally of the day, and Ryan Thrasher drove in Bennett Mann with a groundout for a 2-0 advantage in the second.

Iowa Central’s Andy DeJesus hit an RBI triple to tie the game in the bottom of the third, and he scored on a double-steal attempt to put the Tritons in front.

MCC got even when Aneudis Sandoval came across on a wild pitch in the fifth, but Iowa Central responded in the home half when DeJesus tripled in Will Gormally a second time and then scored on Damian Rutherford’s sacrifice fly. The Tritons led the rest of the way.

Marshalltown scratched out single runs in the seventh and ninth. Blaskovich plated his second run of the day with a single scoring Draysun Lum in the seventh, and Lum came across on Ty Russell’s sacrifice fly in the ninth.

Blaskovich and Sandoval had two hits apiece, including a double for Sandoval, to account for four of MCC’s seven hits. Mann also doubled and scored.

Parker Rolfes went 6 2/3 innings in the loss, allowing seven runs – six earned – on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts. His counterpart, Abraham Flete, struck out nine over 6 2/3 frames. He allowed four earned on six hits, a walk and two hit batsmen.

Gormally and Tyler Franko had three hits apiece to lead Iowa Central.

MCC plays a cross-divisional doubleheader on Thursday, hosting Kirkwood at 2 p.m. at Shawn Williams Field.
