MCC softball receives first-ever votes

After setting a school record for single-season wins, the Tigers established another mark in the record books Wednesday – their first appearance in the rankings.

Winning 10 straight games, the Marshalltown Community College softball team received votes in the latest NJCAA Division II poll. The Tigers are currently 28-14 and fourth in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference with a 14-8 league mark.

MCC is one of four ICCAC schools to appear in this week’s national poll along with No. 4 Kirkwood Community College, No. 16 DMACC and fellow vote-getter Iowa Central. The Tigers were set to host the fourth-ranked Eagles Wednesday but rain postponed the doubleheader to Friday with first pitch set for 2 p.m.

MCC travels to Ellsworth Saturday for a pair of games before hosting Iowa Central Sunday in a crucial twinbill. The Tigers are two games behind the third-place Tritons (37-12, 16-6).

Freshman and ICCAC Offensive Player of the Week Lexie Biehl has sparked MCC at the plate and leads the conference in hits, doubles, batting average and on-base percentage. Sophomore Sarah Wilson owns a 14-7 record in the circle and ranks third in the nation with 175 strikeouts.
