Bobcat girls battle elements, finish 4th

ANKENY – Adverse weather shortened the Ankeny Hawkette Invitational from an 18-hole event, but perhaps the Bobcats would have preferred to keep playing.

Overcoming a slow start, the Marshalltown girls’ team rallied to finish fourth out of 11 teams with a score of 188 on Otter Creek Golf Course’s back nine Thursday. Ashley Harris carded a five-over 40 to claim runner-up honors, winning a cardback over Ankeny Centennial’s Karli Kerrigan via a birdie on the par-4 18th hole.

Dowling Catholic’s Allison Olberding captured medalist honors with a 39 and led the Maroons to the team title at 169 – five strokes ahead of runner-up West Des Moines Valley. Southeast Polk (186) edged out the Bobcats by two strokes, while Ankeny Centennial (194) completed the top five.

“We battled well in some tough conditions,” MHS coach Lucas Johnson said. “When we teed it off it was downright miserable with the cold, wind, and rain and we had a couple of rough holes to start the round. Once we got the feel for the greens after the rains, we looked much more comfortable.”

Harris squeezed her way to a runner-up finish by coming through on her final hole of the day.

“Ashley had an excellent day, especially tee to green,” Johnson said. “She put an exclamation point on her round by sticking one close on 18 to make birdie.”

Madison Sogge followed with a 48, Niccole Wolken shot a 49 and Natalie Kueny’s 51 completed the Bobcats’ team score. Shelby Brennecke and Kierra Carbajal each fired 59s for Marshalltown.

The Bobcats will compete in the Ames Invite Monday at Veenker Golf Course starting at noon. MHS will host the Little Cyclones at American Legion Golf Course Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
