Bobcats blast away at STC/EM

Lexi Vaughn doubled her season goal-scoring total with a hat trick in the first 8 minutes and the Marshalltown girls’ soccer team waltzed to a 10-0 rout of South Tama County/East Marshall on Friday night at Leonard Cole Field.

Vaughn finished with five goals on the night, including back-to-back tallies late in the first half and 2 minutes after intermission. She gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead with scores in the fifth, sixth and eighth minutes, helped along by assists from Molly Major and Ellyn Boland.

Major netted two goals of her own, and Boland finished with three assists in Marshalltown’s first win over a team not named Des Moines East.

Rachel Whaley chalked up her first goal of the season on an assists from Brittany Waldron, Emily Rebik found the back of the net, and Lexi Gimbel notched the game’s final goal on a helper from Erin Woltjer. Goalkeeper Amanda Hughes needed to make just one save for the shutout.

“It was good to get a solid team win,” said MHS coach Allie Osmundson. “Everyone played hard and contributed.

“Hopefully this game and scoring a lot of goals will give us confidence and momentum moving forward.”

The Bobcats (3-2) take to the road on Tuesday, visiting Class 2A No. 4-ranked Ankeny Centennial. South Tama/East Marshall (1-5), which was credited with a forfeit win over Grinnell after last Thursday’s match, hosts Hudson next Thursday.
