Bloom helps MCC forge split with Muscatine

Looking to salvage an Iowa Community College Athletic Conference split with Muscatine Community College, head coach Rich Grife called upon East Marshall graduate John Bloom again to carry the Tigers. The sophomore delivered with a complete-game, 3-2 win to give the Marshalltown Community College baseball team a split in Friday’s twinbill.

The visiting Cardinals won the opener 5-0 for their first win in six games in the series.

Bloom held the Cardinals scoreless through the first four frames of game two. After failing to score in the opener, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings of play. Daryl Blaskovich delivered a sacrifice fly and Ty Russell connected on a solo home run in the next at-bat to put MCC up 2-0 after one inning. Pedro Lopez scored on a groundout by Alexis Melendez in the second for the three-run edge.

Bloom induced three double-plays, and the right-hander from Laurel struck out three for his second win of the season.

MCC (18-28, 6-12) got just one hit in the opener, striking out 15 times in the 5-0 loss.

Friday’s game-two win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Tigers, who host Muscatine (14-27, 2-16) for another doubleheader today starting at noon.
