Tigers’ streak ends at the hands of No. 4 Kirkwood

The No. 4 Kirkwood Community College softball team extended its winning streak to 27 games while ending Marshalltown CC’s 10-game run with an ICCAC sweep, 2-1 and 9-1 in five innings.

The host Tigers (28-16, 14-10) wasted little time stating its case for the upset in the opener as Tacie Blunk belted a two-out home run in the bottom of the first off Shyanne Saladino to tie the game at one.

The Eagles answered with a run in the second, while MCC managed just one baserunner the rest of the game – a leadoff single by Lexie Biehl in the fourth.

Saladino struck out 13, while Mackenzie Gott struck out 10 batters in a four-hitter.

MCC’s starting pitcher in game two, Sarah Wilson, surrendered six runs over three innings in the nightcap. She scored the Tigers’ only run after leading off the fourth with a double.

MCC plays a 2 p.m. twinbill today at Ellsworth.
