Former preps compete at Drake Relays

DES MOINES – BCLUW graduate Haddie Vawter scored a pair of third-place medals at the Drake Relays to bookend her younger sister’s bronze-medal performance in the high school long jump.

Vawter, a senior, ran the opening leg of the Wartburg College women’s distance medley relay, which clocked in at 11 minutes, 43.28 seconds, to take third place in the women’s college division on Friday morning inside Drake Stadium.

Haddie’s sister Mallory, a junior at BCLUW, advanced through preliminaries of the prep long jump and took third. She also scored sixth in the 100-meter hurdles.

On Saturday, Haddie Vawter again ran the opening leg for a Wartburg relay. The Knights’ 4×800 foursome combined on a third-place finish in 9:02.52.

Another BCLUW graduate, Jay Welp, participated in a pair of relays for Morningside College. Welp opened for the Mustangs’ fourth-place 4×800 and also ran on the 4×400 squad, which was 27th in the prelims.

Welp, a junior, was the anchor for Morningside’s sprint medley team, which took ninth on Saturday.

University of Iowa senior Adrianne Alexia, a Grundy Center graduate, ran the open 800 on Thursday and returned to the blue oval one last time on Friday, helping the Hawkeyes to an eighth-place finish in the 4×800. The relay team’s time of 8:49.95 is the fourth-best in school history.
