Arson arrest made in overnight fire
A 48-year-old Marshalltown resident has been arrested for second degree arson and second degree burglary after an incident overnight at St. Mary’s Convent building at 12 W. Linn St. Van Allen Gentry has been charged and is in the Marshall County jail. At 12:34 a.m. Monday, a call came in to the Marshalltown Police and Fire Departments of flames at the building. Significant fire and smoke damage occurred at the facility and no injuries were reported. Initial investigations indicated that a burglary also occurred at the location.
At 3:03 a.m. Monday, Gentry came to the police station saying he had knowledge of the fire. He later admitted to breaking into the convent building and setting this fire and another fire on Sunday.
The incidents remain under investigation. Linn Street is open to normal traffic this morning.
