Former MHS golfer takes top prize at MCC tourney
RIVERSIDE – Recording 13 birdies over three rounds, Marshalltown native Ben Wollam claimed medalist honors and led the Grand View University men’s golf team to the title at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Golf Championship at Blue Top Ridge Tuesday.
Wollam, a sophomore, used a six-under 66 in the second round to separate himself for a six-under 210 overall – three strokes ahead of teammate Matt Weeks. The Vikings tallied a two-day score of 858 to earn a 21-stroke cushion over Mount Mercy. St. Ambrose was a distant third (903) in the seven-team field.
Grand View’s entire quintet finished in the top-10 with Jay Monahan also garnering all-tournament honors with a 215 for fourth. He was one stroke behind Mount Mercy’s Ryan Schrimer. Tyler Christians and Tyler Smith tied for 10th with each carding a 224.
