SPORTS SHORTS: Rebel girls stun No. 10 Denver, 3-1

DENVER – Nicole Adair scored her Class 1A-leading 20th goal in helping the Gladbrook-Reinbeck girls’ soccer team upset No. 10-ranked Denver by a 3-1 score on Tuesday.

The Rebels (5-4) won for the fourth time in their last five games, sending the host Cyclones to 6-2 on the season.

Adair had a goal and an assist, while Hanna Christopher and Megan Oeschlager also scored goals for G-R. Kyleah Dugan chipped in an assist, while Bailea Evenson recorded 18 saves in net for the Rebels.

Adair has totaled 20 goals and 17 assists in nine games for the Rebels this season. She currently ranks atop 1A in both goals (20) and points (47). Her goals total is third-best in all of Iowa, while her points total is fourth.

Bailey Victoria scored the lone Denver goal. Kathryn Kuennen made seven saves for the Cyclones.

Gladbrook-Reinbeck returns to action Monday with a road match at Aplington-Parkersburg.

STC/EM boys bag four win in last five

TAMA – The South Tama County/East Marshall boys’ soccer team got goals from four different players in a 4-0 shutout victory over Independence on Tuesday.

The Trojans (4-5) were led by Alex Martinez, who tallied a goal and two assists in the victory. Jose Alcazar had a goal and an assist, while Adrian Castanon and Lansana Mohr both scored a goal as well for STC/EM.

Luis Perez made four saves in net in shutting out the visiting Mustangs (5-8).

The Trojans play at home again tonight, entertaining Oskaloosa.

Spartan netters fall to Union girls, 7-2

GRUNDY CENTER – The Grundy Center girls’ tennis team dropped to 0-5 for the spring with a 7-2 loss at the hands of Union Community on Tuesday.

The Spartans won a pair of singles contests – getting wins from Gabby Haman and Meghan Saak – but could not make up the difference after an 0-3 doubles outcome.

Haman, at No. 4 singles, scored an 8-3 win over Lauren Barz, while Saak netted an 8-5 win over Kylee Faber.

At No. 3 singles, Piper Johanns took Emily Dalluge to the brink in a 9-7 loss.

The rest of the matches went down overwhelmingly in favor of the visiting Knights.

Grundy Center returns to action with a home dual meet against South Hardin on Monday starting at 4:15 p.m.
