Bobcat girls send four entries to state meet

The Marshalltown girls’ track and field team did not qualify anyone for next week’s Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships automatically on Thursday, but got good news Friday morning when the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the final qualifiers for the annual event.

The Bobcats will have four entries at the state meet, which begins this Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Junior Rachel Blagg headlines the quartet with three berths for the second straight year.

She finished fourth in the open 800-meter run at Leonard Cole Field but ran against three of the top six qualifying times in Class 4A. Her finishing time of 2 minutes, 25.61 seconds was still good enough to qualify 14th overall.

She’ll be joined with some teammates in both the 4×400 and the distance medley relay. Blagg will anchor both events.

The Bobcats’ distance medley team came into the district meet with the eighth best time in 4A and will take the 12th best qualifying time to the state meet next week. The foursome of Chione Brooks, Tabby Steffensen, Sabrina Daugherty and Blagg hit the line in 4:25.54.

Jasmine Scott is expected to take the place of Daugherty next week, but Daugherty may get the chance to still run in the 4×400 as that unit qualified for the state meet with the 21st best time.

That quartet of Blagg, Scott, Daesha Underhill and Daugherty ended up seventh in their own district but their time of 4:16.10 was still good enough to sneak in.
