Endowment started to benefit library

Two big supporters of the Marshalltown Public Library have honored their wives by donating $10,000 to start an endowment for its future.

Marshalltown residents George Taylor and Bill Bestmann have donated the funds in honor of their wives Darlene and Gerry who have passed away.

“I’m so sold on the library,” Taylor said. “It’s No. 1 in the nation. We’ve got a library that does a lot. If they had a little more money they can do even more.”

Bestmann said he wanted to be part of starting this endowment “to recognize and show respect for his wife Gerry.”

Library Director Sarah Rosenblum said this is the first endowment the library has started and there are hopes more donors will follow suit to add to this endowment.

“This is just another great funding stream that the library will use to expand and enhance services,” Rosenblum said.

She said the future funds will most likely go to support youth programs.

“We have a special place in our heart for the little ones in our community,” Rosenblum said.

The endowment is made through the Community Foundation of Marshall County.

“We hope this endowment allows the library to do more activities for kids,” said Bettie Bolar of the foundation. “They already do great activities and hands-on activities for kids.”

Rosenblum said this is another example of how the community supports the library.

“This is a very supportive community,” Rosenblum said. “Our library touches everybody.”
