Calvin’s The Ridge Steakhouse is Marshalltown’s newest restaurant

No one can say Tim and Alli Shore don’t follow-up.

Three years ago, while preparing to open Calvin Rockett’s Bar & Grill, the father-daughter team from Marshalltown said they would eventually re-open the upper level as well.

They did more than two weeks ago, and now Calvin’s The Ridge Steakhouse is Marshalltown’s newest restaurant, and only a few steps up from their successful Calvin Rockett’s Bar & Grill at 2103 S. Center St.

The Ridge Steakhouse features popular cuts ribeye, sirloin, New York strip and T-Bone. Also on the menu are appetizers, chicken, pizza, a wide variety of salads, including a sirloin steak salad, sandwiches and more.

If one is not hungry for a hefty 21-ounce Big Boy Cut, there are cold cut roast beef, salmon fillet and sweet onion burger sandwiches. Also on the menu are breaded shrimp, bistro steak medallions, shrimp and scallop skewers and salmon filets. Rounding out the selections are shrimp cocktails, crab cakes, hummus, jalapeno flatbread, jumbo wings, steak flat bread, melon prosciutto and reuben bites.

Sides, from asparagus to baked potato to coleslaw is offered as is a kid’s menu.

Alli Shore emphasized that only top cuts of meat are served.

“We buy only top USDA choice,” Alli said.

The steakhouse also has a “grill your own” feature, where a customer can save $2 by being a do-it-yourselfer.

The gas grill is always available for public use while the charcoal grill will be lit every Friday and Saturday, and available to special parties during the week.

The bar features nine beers, including the famous Guinness on tap, as well as mixed drinks. Additionally, the entire upper level can be rented any night for group functions.

A review of the business website revealed that a number of customers had done just that.

Steakhouse customers will notice, as part of the extensive upper level remodel, that paintings are for sale by central Iowa artists courtesy of The Perfect Setting. The upper level is now completely handicap accessible from the outside.

The Shores know the building well – Tim Shore was part owner of Fields for 15 years, and more than three years ago, had the opportunity to take over, and completely remodel the lower level first for Calvin Rockett, followed by the upper level.

Daughter Alli then joined him before the lower level remodel and pitched in to help dad.

Both Shores are proud they have invested a significant amount of sweat equity into the building.

“We did as much as we could upstairs,” Alli Shore said.

Alli Shore and Kay Lynn Hoeing, a Marshalltown graphic and website designer, have also teamed up for color schemes and website projects.

They hope Calvin’s The Ridge Steakhouse will duplicate the success experienced at Calvin Rockett’s Bar & Grill. Gift cards are accepted at both Calvin Rockett Bar & Grill and Calvin’s The Ridge Steakhouse.

Business hours are 4 to 10 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday, 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and closed Sunday through Tuesday.
