Van Dyk nets ninth meet victory; STC fifth in invite

TAMA – An opening round of 44 was not going to get it done.

In true championship form, Paige Van Dyk rebounded. And in doing so, the South Tama County senior extended her streak.

The Northern Iowa recruit claimed meet medalist honors for the ninth time in as many events this spring, shooting a 1-over-par 36 on her second nine holes to finish with an 80 on Saturday at the South Tama Invitational.

Van Dyk counteracted three bogeys on her back nine with back-to-back birdies, turning around an atypical start from the front.

But her low round was not enough to buoy the Trojans in the team standings. STC finished fifth out of seven squads with a 420 total.

Newton edged Nevada, 363-366, for the team title, while Benton Community (386) came in third. Independence was fourth (414), followed by the Trojans, Grinnell (424) and Vinton-Shellsburg (442).

All of Newton’s four scoring golfers finished in the top 10, while Nevada accounted for three more. Behind Van Dyk was Nevada’s Christine Ausman (84), Newton’s Jessica Reynolds (87) and Grinnell’s Sarah Frischmeyer (89).

South Tama turns its attention to the postseason, traveling to Nevada on Monday for the first round regional meet at 9:30 a.m. at Indian Creek Country Club.
