TRACK & FIELD: Boomgarden leads South Hardin at state qualifier
DIKE – South Hardin junior Sarah Boomgarden will be busy at the blue oval next week when the Tigers take part in the Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships at Drake Stadium.
Boomgarden will participate in four of South Hardin’s six total events at the state meet. She only qualified automatically in the 4×100 with teammates Keela Bunger, Kayla Prosser and Sarah Wiechmann, but received at-large berths in the 100- and 200-meter dash as well as the high jump.
The other two state-qualifying events for the Tigers will feature Tiger sophomore Lydia Rose. She received an at-large berth in the 800 after taking fourth at the state qualifier with a time of 2 minutes, 28.37 seconds. She’ll have the 10th best qualifying time overall at the state meet.
Rose also will anchor the 4×800 relay on the blue oval. That foursome also includes Megan Carr, Miquela Teske and Claire Damon. They were third at the state qualifier with a time of 10:07.24. That time also was the 10th best qualifying time overall.
Boomgarden participated in three very loaded individual events at the state qualifier. She was third in the 100 with a time 12.88 but that time qualified fourth overall. Her 200 time was 26.74, which gave her a fourth-place finish Friday but the sixth best time overall.
Boomgarden reached 5 feet in the high jump and that was good for third at the state qualifier and seventh overall.
East Marshall adds pair of at-large berths
Madison Hinegardner, Theresa Hatch, Brooke Miller and Kelsea Anderson all joined teammate Haley Fye as a multiple-event state qualifers Friday when they were awarded with two at-large berths into the state track and field meet.
Hinegardner took fourth in the 100 hurdles at the state qualifier Thursday but will run on the blue oval after her time of 16.79 was good enough for 20th overall in Class 2A.
She also will team up with Hatch, Miller and Anderson in the 4×100 relay after that foursome hit the line in 53.24. That was fourth at the state qualifier and is the 23rd best time overall.
Fye will run in the 400 hurdles and 3,000-meter run individually and also will team up with Hatch, Anderson and Miller in the distance medley.
West Marshall tacks on two relays to state meet
The Trojans already knew that Jennifer Davis (shot put), Shannon Breja (800 meters) and the 4×400 relay would be part of the state meet this week at Drake Stadium.
But they were awarded with two more at-large events when the rest of the state qualifiers were released Friday.
Also qualifying were the sprint medley and distance medley relays.
Kelsey Debruyn, Sadie Simatovich, Shelby Larsen and Madie Streeter finished the sprint medley in fifth place but their time of 1 minute, 58.01 seconds was good for 22nd overall.
Larsen, Streeter, Breja and Allison Hilleman also teamed up in the distance medley relay. That group was third at the state qualifier with a time of 4:26.47. It was the ninth best qualifiying time overall.
