McMartin, Spartans make strong statement

GREENE – Josie McMartin ran away from the field and the Spartans surged past their competition.

Keeping its season rolling, the Grundy Center girls golf team cruised to a Class 1A Region 4B title with a score of 369 Monday at Round Grove Golf Club.

McMartin fired an 11-over 83 for medalist honors to lead a quartet of Spartans in the top five. Hillary Samo was runner-up with 92, while Lindsay Freeman (95) and Maddy Grineski (99) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Riceville’s Abby Dunn claimed the other qualifier spot with a 93.

Clarksville was 51 strokes back in second with a 420 and North Butler (509) took third. AGWSR (516) placed fifth out of eight teams.

Jill Itzen (113) and Kate Ross (115) also represented Grundy Center (40-9) and finished 12th and 13th in the field, respectively.

“Another tough day of playing with high winds and some rain,” Spartan coach Rick Schupbach said. “Our mindset for the most part was pretty strong as some of the girls struggled early with their games but found a way to put up a score.

Brooke Harrenstein had the top score for AGWSR at 117, while Ashley Sicard was four strokes back. Maddie Deters (138), Kenzie Huisman (140) and Kim Ventura (146) rounded out the Cougar roster.

The Spartans advance to the Class 1A regional final at Oak Leaf Country Club in Reinbeck on May 27.

“It’s the same theme for us moving forward … short game, short game, short game,” Schupbach said. “We would be an amazing team if we quit throwing away so many strokes around the greens.”
