Mohawks hold off MHS girls’ netters in finale
MASON CITY – The Bobcats put up one of their best fights of the season though it still left them short on the score sheet.
The Marshalltown girls’ tennis team gave Mason City a battle in many of the 11 matches but ended up falling 8-3 in a Central Iowa Conference Northern Division dual here Monday.
Kathleen Ferrin posted two of the Bobcats’ three wins including a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Michelle Hahn at No. 2 singles. She also teamed with Brenda Livengood for a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) victory at No. 2 doubles.
Samantha Tocheri and Jenna Jaeckel joined up for Marshalltown’s other victory at No. 3 doubles, claiming a 4-6, 6-4, (10-6) triumph over Hahn and Aubury Coleman.
Tocheri fell just short of a first-set win in a 7-5, 6-2 loss at No. 4 singles, while Livengood dropped a 6-3, 6-3 match at No. 5.
Megan Emerson and Kaelin Lents held their own in a 6-3, 6-4 loss at No. 4 doubles and the No. 5 duo of Victoria Sanchez and Olivia Mathews took five games in a 6-2, 6-3 setback.
The Bobcats (1-9, 0-3) capped their season as a team but will compete in the individual regionals Thursday at 9 a.m. at Waterloo.
