Broderick’s hat trick sends Valley past Bobcats
WEST DES MOINES – Mark Broderick scored three goals, Beau Blazek stopped six shots and the Class 4A No. 9 West Des Moines Valley boys’ soccer team avenged last season’s loss to Marshalltown with a 4-2 victory here Tuesday.
The Tigers (13-4) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and held on after a late rally from the Bobcats. Nicolas Gorham added a goal and an assist in the Tigers’ fourth win in five matches, and Ryan Johnston chipped in two assists. Valley won its Senior Night match after losing to MHS 3-0 on Senior Night last season.
“It was a physical battle throughout, and Valley was not going to repeat what happened last year,” said first-year Bobcat coach Chris Fuchsen.
MHS senior David Gomez, who was coming off a five-goal game against Mason City, sent his 12th goal of the season past Blazek to make it 3-1. Ellis Buchwald’s ninth tally made things interesting at 3-2, but Valley went back up two goals a few minutes later to seal the win.
Martin Chavarria had an assist for the Bobcats, who lost for the first time in their last five matches.
The Bobcats (14-3) will try to get back on the winning track Friday when they host Ankeny Centennial (13-3) at 7:30 p.m. That match was originally scheduled for April 29 but was postponed due to inclement weather.
Marshalltown will open Class 3A Substate 2 play Tuesday. The Bobcats entertain Indianola (3-11-1) at Leonard Cole Field at 6 p.m. The winner of that match travels to Southeast Polk to take on the 16th-ranked Rams (13-5-1) at 6 p.m. on May 29.
Southeast Polk edged the Bobcats, 1-0, in Pleasant Hill earlier this season.
