Tiger trio garners all-Region XI honors

Coming off the program’s first NJCAA Northern District Tournament appearance, three players from the Marshalltown Community College baseball team were named to the all-Region XI squad.

Daryl Blaskovich and Ty Russell made the second team, while former Bobcat Bennett Mann earned honorable mention.

Russell earned his second consecutive all-region nod after being named to the first team as a freshman. The Tigers’ first baseman batted above .300 for the second straight year, finishing with a .317 mark in 2014 – second highest on the team. The Victoria, B.C., native also ranked second on the squad with eight home runs and led the Tigers with 37 RBIs and 37 walks.

Blaskovich repeated as a second team selection after leading the lineup with a .325 batting average. The sophomore shortstop collected nine hits in his final four postseason games to surpass the 100 career hit milestone, finishing with 105. The Lindsey Wilson College signee tallied a team-best 14 doubles along with five home runs and 35 runs scored – second best for MCC.

There was no sophomore slump for Mann who more than doubled his hit count (43) after recording just 20 hits during his freshman season. The left fielder led the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference with 14 home runs, including three multi-homer games. Mann led the Tigers with 100 total bases and 36 runs, while ranking second with 36 RBIs.

The Tiger trio combined for more than 40 percent of the team’s run production during a 22-35 campaign. MCC finished as runner-up of the Region XI Division I Tournament for the second straight year. The Tigers have placed at least three players on the all-region squad in nine consecutive years and have at least one repeat selection in each of those seasons.

Iowa Western and Indian Hills split with four players apiece on the all-region first team.
