Man strangles, punches woman

A Marshalltown man faces two assault charges after he allegedly strangled and punched his girlfriend.

Phillip Brooks, 27, was arrested on a warrant Tuesday after an alleged incident that caused the victim to go to the emergency room.

Capt. Brian Batterson, with the Marshalltown Police Department, said on Monday an argument started between the two when the victim was on her way to work and Brooks wanted to go to a friend’s house instead of watching his kids.

As the victim was leaving Brooks knocked her down, grabbed her by the throat and verbally threatened her, Batterson said.

The victim got up from the floor and went to another room. Brooks then punched her and continued to making threats, Batterson said.

Someone in their apartment called 911 and Brooks left.

The victim was taken by an ambulance to get treated for swelling around her eye and what she thought was a broken hand, Batterson said.

Brooks is charged with domestic assault second offense and domestic assault impeding air flow.
